Brainsparks partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the third staging of Slingshot, which this year coincided with ASEAN Summit 2017, last October 19-20 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila. Slingshot served as the official startup and innovation conference of ASEAN 2017 and the biggest international startup conference in the Philippines to date.
Slingshot 2017, with the theme “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” aims to create a regional network of ASEAN ecosystem players including startups, angel investors, incubators, mentors, academe, co-working spaces, and industry experts. The event also aims to showcase investment-ready startups for potential local and international investors as well as facilitate easy access to information between governments running startup development programs in the region.

Around 1,300 local and foreign delegates participated in the summit. This two-day conference featured events such as panel discussions, collaborative breakout learning sessions featuring different topics designed to help entrepreneurs in their digital journey, public and private sector dialogues, pitching competitions, and the Slingshot ASEAN Startup Alley exhibit.

Brainsparks co-organized several Slingshot ASEAN Summit activities such as the Slingshot ASEAN Welcome Dinner, an exclusive gathering of selected international and local investors, executives, government officials, and key people in the Philippines startup industry, which gave local startups the opportunity to forge and reinforce local and international linkages; and Investors Matching. Brainsparks also successfully held a learning hub together with MaGIC, the renowned regional leader in startup and innovation program from Malaysia, which focused on how corporates can work with startups and vice versa.

"We are glad to be able to have this chance to participate in and contribute to Slingshot ASEAN, and in so doing also celebrate 50 years of linkages between the countries of ASEAN. We look forward to the continued development and progress we in the Philippines can achieve with ASEAN.” said Brainsparks Founder Lionel Belen.

Brainsparks also collaborated with Techsake and Fenox Venture Capital for the Startup World Cup Philippines (SWC), a global conference and competition that brings together top startups, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and world-class tech CEOs. The winners of which will be sent to Silicon Valley to meet companies such as Google, Facebook, AirBnB and other ecosystem players. The sole winner will also represent the Philippines to compete in the Startup World Cup Global Competition for a chance to win $1M in investment.

Slingshot ASEAN Summit is just one of the initiatives that Brainsparks supports to help aspiring entrepreneurs and startups particularly those in the field of technology accelerate. As a business incubator and investor, Brainsparks has been active in addressing the country’s development issues by delivering workshops to hundreds of students, faculty, professionals, and founders in partnership with institutions such as Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to name a few.
